Alexander Sabol of Fairfield died Tuesday night at the age of 96. Sabol had two careers in his life: first as a factory worker in Southport and later living out his passion for cooking.
Sabol was born in Danville, Ill., on May 6, 1914. He moved to Bridgeport at the age of 15 and remained in the area the rest of his life. As a young man, Sabol had a love of British Sports Cars and worked in restoration for the former Harold and Sons of Westport. He then moved on to Southport's Sturm Ruger Co. arms plant, where he worked until retiring in 1975.
After his official retirement, Sabol lived out two passions: cooking and fishing. He worked as a chef for Fairfield spots such as Algonquin Club, Brooklawn Country Club, Mill River Country Club and the Black Rock Yacht Club. And in his spare time, he was an avid freshwater fisherman, practicing the sport until his 95th birthday.
He was predeceased by his wife, Irene Sander Sabol. He is survived by son Kenneth Sabol of Milford; and a granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, Fairfield Center. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. John Olson officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery.
