Sgt. Albert Haynes II, 24, of Austin, Pennsylvania, was discovered dead in a hotel room in Starke, Florida, on Friday, May 30, according to the U.S. Marine Corps.
Haynes was assigned to Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and was supporting a poolee function with Recruiting Station Jacksonville while on temporary additional duty when he died, military officials said.
The Bradford County Sheriff's Office is investigating. Authorities have not released a cause of death, and the case remains open.
Known for his work as a Marine drill instructor, Haynes served as both a field artillery cannoneer and instructor during his military career, officials say. He graduated from Drill Instructor School at Parris Island and earned numerous decorations, including two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.
A GoFundMe launched to support his wife, Kaitlyn Burgett, describes Haynes as "a devoted Marine, a soon-to-be father, and a loving husband." Organizers said his sudden death has left his family, friends, fellow Marines, and community grieving. The fundraiser notes that Burgett is expecting the couple's daughter and seeks assistance with living expenses following the loss.
"He was known for his hard work, his infectious smile, and his ability to bring laughter to any room," organizer Robert Rodriguez wrote on the fundraising page.
Officials have not indicated that foul play is suspected. The Marine Corps said it is cooperating fully with the sheriff's office investigation.
