Ten was the lucky number at graduation on Wednesday night at the Academy of Information Technology and Engineering. The school celebrated its 10th anniversary and, of course, the class of 10 received its diplomas.
The school, whose mission is to prepare students to work in a technologically advanced world, looked to the future while remembering how far it had come. Ten years ago, we had an idea we sacrificed our senior year of high school to see if this could make our future better, said James Simon, who graduated in the schools first class, one of just 17 students, in 2001.
As testament to AITEs programs, Simon graduated from UConn, got a job at UBS and now is the director of technology for UConn-Stamfords School of Business.
While Simons presence was a reminder of the schools humble start, graduating seniors (this years class numbers more than a 100) and others used their time onstage to urge students to spend every day trying to reach their goals.
Martha Blakeslee told her classmates to treat each day as a gift fill your life with good memories.
Sounding a similar theme, Kevin Kendall said, We cant live as if we have an infinite number of days to fulfill our goals . Make a difference in the world. We should all leave it a shade brighter than when we came into it.
Among the guests at the graduation was Mayor Michael Pavia, who spoke of two important words: vision and passion. Your life ahead is an empty canvas, he said. Fill that canvas with your own vision and push it ahead with your passion.
