A Mom Tackles Weighty Issues

Wilton resident Carolyn Selinger's pregnancy seven years ago culminated in the birth of her son. But it also produced an idea for a business.

She knew it would be tough to lose the weight she had gained, but she was embarrassed to go to a gym in the shape she was in.

Knowing that other women felt the same way, she decided to become a personal trainer, focusing on helping mother's get back in shape after giving birth.

"Body image and appearance are so important ... and my goal is to get them back to where they were," Selinger said of her goals for her clients.

Though she came up with the idea seven years ago, it just came to fruition just this year when her son became old enough to be at camp or school the entire day. Knowing from personal experience how busy mothers can be, she designs each workout to best fit her clients' time needs.

Selinger said that she would do "anything to just get [her clients] confident and feeling about themselves again.

Like other business owners, Selinger is always trying to expand. One idea has been to provide strength and toning classes for people who walk to stay fit. She also wants to make her workouts more convenient by offering them via Skype.

Selinger also trains classes at the Wilton Family Y. But she stresses that she isn't trying to keep clients from the gym, but rather give them the confidence to return.
