Elm Street will be full of trick-or-treaters in colorful costumers Sunday afternoon when the 29th annual New Canaan Chamber of Commerce Halloween Parade kicks off.
This year's event will be slightly different than the shows in previous years, said Tucker Murphy, executive director of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce. While parade participants will still gather in the upper lot at Park Street before the procession starts, participants can also visit booths with fun and activities. Families can get their pictures taken by Susan Morrow Photography and can enter a "Best Dressed Family" contest.
Murphy said it's an opportunity to make an enjoyable afternoon even more fun. "It's like tailgating before a game," Murphy said. "The kids get up there and go through their goodie bags. Why not make it more fun?"
The parade will travel from the intersection of Park and Elm along Elm Street, down to the intersection of Elm and Main and loop back up Elm Street, which will be closed to vehicle traffic for the parade.
Murphy said about 1,000 children marched in last year's event. She's expecting just as big a crowd on Sunday. "It's just a tradition. New Canaan is heavily steeped in tradition and this brings out everyone on a beautiful fall day," she said. "It's a nice tradition that everyone remembers from year to year."
