8th Grade Wreckers Nip Fairfield

WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Staples High School Wreckers mounted a scintillating comeback against Brian McMahon High School Saturday night. The next day, the Senior 8 Wreckers followed in their footsteps with a late fourth-quarter touchdown to defeat the Fairfield Senior 8 Red team, 8-7.

Captains for the game were Bobby Becker, Dan Cozzi, Evan Gilland and Ryan Nicholas. Matt Johnson intercepted a Fairfield pass on the first play of the game and the Wreckers defense continued to dominate for most of the first half. Jackson Ward, Cozzi, Becker, Connor Mathewson, Matt Flinn, Jonathan Maragos, Sam Ahlgrim and Brandon Schock kept the Fairfield running game under wraps.

Two long punt returns by Connor Adrian gave the offense good field position in the second quarter, but the Fairfield defense prevented any scoring by the Wreckers. A last-second touchdown by Fairfield put the Wreckers in a 7-0 hole at the end of the half, but the home crowd's spirits were lifted with a spectacular dance routine by the Wreckers Cheerleaders.

The Wreckers defense held Fairfield throughout the third and fourth quarters with outstanding efforts by Zachary Arvanitis, Flinn, Grant Moberg, Schock, Ahlgrim, Harry Garber and Adrian to keep Fairfield out of the end zone. The offense came alive at the end of the fourth quarter when Matt Johnson hit Ben Thaw for a 50 yard pass play.

Then Becker, Ward, Sam Arciola and Cozzi cleared the way for the ground game with productive running by Adrian, Gilland and Jack Griffin. Gilland ploughed 4 yards into Fairfield's end zone with 2 minutes left and Connor Adrian's live extra point gave the Wreckers the lead. The defense closed out the victory. Next up: Ridgefield Senior 8 Black.
