DARIEN, Conn. -- The Darien 7th Grade White Team used their ball control offense to crunch the defending Fairfield County Football League co-champion New Canaan, 21-7, on Saturday night.
Darien won the toss and opted for possession to try to keep the high powered New Canaan offense off the field. The Darien offensive line dominated the opening drive anchored by Kody Shutzman, Cord Fox, Peter Marren, Josh Stevenson and Will Barker. Running backs Charlie Sealy, Zak Swetye and Charlie Christensen alternated runs and were able to keep the chains moving. With a fourth down and six to go the offense went to the shotgun and QB Jack Joyce hit fullback Charlie Olsen for a seven yard pass to keep the drive alive. Five plays later Christensen bounced around the left end behind Connor Galante for the score. The tally capped a 14-play drive that consumed nearly 10 minutes.
The defense stepped up next. In his first play as linebacker Brendan Berrigan hunted down the New Canaan ball carrier with swarming help from Ethan Stansbury and Tanner Strub. The defense quickly produced a turnover on a New Canaan fumble. The offense scored five plays later on a Charlie Sealy run set up by a 39-yard Zak Swetye catch and run. The defense hung tough in the second half with great penetration from Barker and blanket pass coverage from Carter Scott, Christensen and Swetye. They once again delivered the offensive side of the ball with good field position. The Darien offense put its final drive together behind the blocking of Kip Rand-Ricciardi, James Johnson, Brett Durbin and Charlie Duggan. Berrigan converted his first extra point of the year to make it 21-0. New Canaan got a late score to make the final 21-7.
