The Board of Selectmen approved a request for $6,000 for the Weston Warm Up Fund at its meeting last night. Fund Chairwoman Dawn Egan and Treasurer Andy Langlois said the group helped 52 households with their heating bills this year, two fewer than last year.
The average income of families needing assistance to pay for oil, gas or electricity to heat their homes was $23,984, according to Egan. The majority of those who qualify for help are elderly. Egan said the fund has had to turn down some families that because their income exceeded the maximum allowed under the program.
Also at the meeting, the First Selectman Gayle Weinstein signed a contract for search services to find a new library director to replace Jane Atkinson, who is retiring. Atkinson has worked at the Weston Library for 35 years and will continue in her position until a replacement is found.
Selectman Dan Gilbert said Atkinson's exit is an opportune time to reassess how library space is being used. He suggested the town look into using the building as a "community structure with a library dimension." Selectman David Muller said there are other spaces in town that might be used as a community building.
The board accepted the resignation of Marcia Bittner from the Western Connecticut Convention and Visitors Bureau and the resignation of Jennifer Hunt from the Commission for Children and Youth. Jennifer Skor was appointed to fill Hunt's position.
David Coprio was reappointed to the Building Committee, Nicholas Bell was reappointed to the Nature Center Building Committee, and Barbara Reynolds was appointed to fill Steve Ezzes' former spot as moderator.
