DARIEN, Conn. The Darien fifth-grade Wave football team opened its season with a strong 21-0 win over Fairfield Junior 5 Red on Sunday afternoon. From the first play of the game, when Andrew Lucas ran wide right 60 yards for a touchdown, the Darien Wave Team executed its plays well.
They played under a hot sun and temperatures hotter than 90 degrees on the Darien High School turf. The Waves offensive line, including Charlie Fuller, Dylan Bean and George Demopoulos, did its job of blocking and opening holes for the running backs. On another pitch right, following the lead blocking of Wave fullback Ryan Darby, Andrew Lucas ran 50 yards for another touchdown and a 2-point conversion to follow.
Additionally, the offensive line, anchored by ends Johan Trippitelli and Walker Laughon, gave quarterback Jake Hyde enough time to get off a 30-yard pass to Bruce Ferguson. He ran it in for the Waves third touchdown.
And the defense proved it could make plays happen, too, led by safeties Charlie Zalinsky and Tyler Cramer. Fumble recoveries were made by Brian Cicero, Lantz Riggio and Paul Ridder. Reilly Warble, Nick Pope and Bruce Ferguson made interceptions.
The team's next game is against Ridgefield Junior 5 Black on Sept. 11 at 9:30 a.m. at East Ridge Middle School in Ridgefield.
