The blaze began at around 6 a.m. on Monday, June 22, when Broome County first responders received reports of a fire at the Knights Inn at 2603 East Main St. in the hamlet of Endwell, according to New York State Police.

Members of the Endwell Fire Department soon arrived and found heavy, black smoke coming from the front of the building, as well as flames shooting from its rear. Police said the flames spread rapidly.

Soon, several fire departments, ambulance crews, and police agencies descended on the scene to help, as well as the New York State Office of Fire, the Broome County Office of Emergency Services, and the Broome County Mobile Crisis Response Team.

Two fatalities were confirmed, police said, also adding that at least two people were taken to Wilson Medical Center. The names of those who died have not yet been released.

Other residents were displaced and are now being helped by the Red Cross, which has set up a temporary shelter at the Vestal United Methodist Church.

The Red Cross is now accepting clothing and hygiene product donations at the church, located at 328 Main St. However, food is not being accepted.

The incident is still an active scene and is now under investigation, police said. More information is expected to be released once it is available.
