Multiple agencies in Greene County responded to Main and Union streets in Catskill for a large structure fire at a row house at around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23.
One person died in the blaze, according to the Catskill Fire Company. No other injuries were reported.
Firefighters from several nearby agencies were called in, including the Malden West and Saugerties fire departments, to prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining units, officials said.
The flames started in the basement before working their way to the roof of the three-story dwelling according to fire officials.
“Catskill fire would like to extend our condolences to the family of the deceased from last night’s fire,” the agency said on Facebook. “We also want to extend our appreciation to all the mutual aid departments who assisted us last night. We were able to save Catskill from a very devastating fire that very easily could have taken the block.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Authorities had not publicly identified the deceased as of Monday, Feb. 24.
