Recent AAP guidance supports children participating in these summer activities as they provide multiple benefits to children. Studies have shown that camps with proper safety measures in place have been successful at limiting COVID-19 spread, so it is important for parents, children, and caregivers to follow the recommended guidelines…

19: NY Unveils New Rules For Fairs, Festivals
As municipalities gear up for a busy summer filled with COVID-free activities, New York has laid out updated guidance for county fairs and local festivals. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that this summer, fairs, and festivals will be permitted to be held, with certain COVID-19 mandates in place to curtail any spread of the virus. Cuomo said that the Department of Health approval will be required for events with over 5,000 expected attendees, “consistent with the existing review process.” County fairs and local festivals must also ensure that the total number of attendees is limited s…

19: This Is How To Prepare Students For Re-Entering The Classroom, CDC Says
With the Commissioner of Secondary and Elementary School Education calling for all elementary school students to return to the classroom by April, current remote-school students and their parents are preparing to make a big transition. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a three-page checklist for things a family can do to be better prepared for students returning to the classroom. For the most part, the CDC guidelines encourage awareness about services and important contacts, communicating effectively and often with students, and what COVID-19 prevention items s…

19 And The Heart: What We Now Know
During the COVID-19 pandemic, cardiovascular health remains a top health priority — with heart disease and stroke continuing to be the #1 and #5 leading causes of death in the U.S. There is a significant relationship between COVID-19 and cardiovascular disease, including more deaths from cardiovascular disease during the pandemic and serious heart conditions associated with an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19. Nearly a quarter of the people hospitalized with COVID-19 develop myocardial injury or injury to the heart tissue and a significant number of patients have develope…

19: Most Cases Transmitted By People Not Displaying Symptoms, New Study Reveals
Most COVID-19 cases are transmitted by people who do not exhibit symptoms, according to a new study by CDC researchers. The researchers, who used a mathematical approach to assess several scenarios, found that 59 percent of all infections came from asymptomatic transmission -- including those who are pre-symptomatic or never show any COVID symptoms. Most of those asymptomatic spreaders go on to become ill (35 percent), the researchers said, compared to 24 percent who never develop symptoms. "In addition to the identification and isolation of persons with symptomatic COVID-19, effective con…

An additional 6,046 COVID-19 tests returned positive Sunday in New Jersey -- the highest number the state has seen in a single day since the onset of the pandemic in March. This is the third record-high for New Jersey this week, with 4,913 and 5,673 recorded on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Sixteen deaths were also reported. "These numbers speak for themselves," Gov. Phil Murphy said. "Mask up. Social distance. Wash your hands. Avoid gatherings." What Parents Need To Know About
Mis-c
Dear Doctor, As the parent of three young kids, I’m kind of freaked out by the recent news that there’s a new life-threatening complication of COVID-19 in children. What do we know about this problem, and how worried should I be? Sincerely, “Panicked Parent” Dear Panicked: It’s totally understandable that you’re concerned about this new complication called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Since MIS-C is so new (it was first identified in April), there’s still a lot that we don’t know about it. But we are fairly confident that it’s related to the coronavirus as all o…

19 And Your Child With Type 1 Diabetes: What You Need to Know
Presently, data shows that children, adolescents and young adults with well-managed endocrine conditions, such as diabetes, are not at increased risk of getting infected or becoming severely ill with the coronavirus. However, poorly controlled diabetes can weaken their immunity and thereby increase the risk of getting infected. There are some indications that otherwise healthy, but severely obese children are at increased risk of a more complicated lung infection due to COVID-19. New data is becoming available each day about the virus, but in the meantime, parents and caregivers of children w…

19: What You Need to Know
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says women who are pregnant should be monitored more closely than the general population since they are known to be at risk of severe viral illness. Pregnant women experience immunologic and physiologic changes which make them more susceptible to complications from viral respiratory infections. If you are pregnant, you should take the following preventative actions: Avoid people who are sick or who have been exposed to the virus. Clean your hands often using soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. C…

19: Do You Need To Sanitize Groceries? Experts Weigh In
Just when you thought you had all of your bases covered when it comes to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), now people are asking if they need to sanitize groceries. Most health officials, including the CDC and the FDA, are more concerned about people being infected at the grocery store by other people than the virus contaminating groceries. That’s why it’s important to stay at least 6 feet from other people at all times. And not to be afraid to ask someone to step back. The World Health Organization (WHO) said in addition to close person-to-person contact, people can pick up the virus by t…

Safe Use Of Antibiotics
Antibiotics are medications created almost 100 years ago to fight bacterial infections. They have transformed health care and the treatment of medical conditions. Infectious diseases, such as pneumonia, used to be listed as the most common cause of death in the United States; whereas today, it is ranked number eight. Unfortunately, as antibiotic usage has surged in recent years, many bacteria now have developed “antibiotic resistance” so that antibiotics are no longer effective. Just as Superman is resistant to bullets and other weapons, except for Kryptonite, we have now created “Superbugs” …
