“Valiantly, for years now, we have watched him fight and triumph over the secondary effects of his colorectal cancer from 2013, Tara Rountree, his chief of staff, said in a statement.
"Tonight, he lost that battle, and the people of Virginia’s Fourth Congressional District lost a hero who always, always fought for them and put them first."
His death comes a few weeks after he was re-elected to a fourth term in the 2022 midterm elections. The Democrat represented Virginia's 4th congressional district, which includes the state capital of Richmond.
He was elected in 2016 after serving as a legislator in both chambers of Virginia’s General Assembly, according to his website.
Born in Nuremberg, Germany, the politician is the son of an Army veteran and a public school teacher, his bio reads. He graduated from American University with a degree in Political Science and from the University of Virginia School of Law.
In May 2008, he received his Master of Divinity from The Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University.
His death was mourned by many in Congress, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who shared her condolences on Twitter as the news broke.
"It is with great sadness that I join Virginians in mourning the loss of Congressman Donald McEachin: a tireless champion for Virginia families and a force for economic opportunity and environmental justice," she wrote.
Several other colleagues also shared remembrances.
"Until a new representative is elected, our office will remain open and continue to serve our constituents,” Rountree said.
