"Chicken Jockey," a term familiar to players of the popular video game, is causing chaos in some theaters, as some moviegoers have taken to tossing trash and debris at the sight of the zombie character during the film.
The trend has led to attendees cheering and throwing popcorn when the line is said, and some theaters are now putting up warnings.
Incidents have been reported in New Jersey — resulting in some teens being banned - Michigan, Utah — where a live chicken was reportedly introduced to the chaos, multiple other states and countries, according to officials.
"This is a display of immature, disgusting behavior. I honestly hope that your school, which requires such an in-depth honor code, sees this and kicks you out," one user posted on Instagram.
Another added, "you trashed a theater and abused an animal.
"Man… some of you are living a real sad life. I can’t imagine how damaged your mental health has to be to get to this point in life."
Other theaters have also paused the movie before the "chicken jockey" scene, issued warnings, and others have removed people from the building for acting unruly.
There have also been reports of fights breaking out during the scene.
"Dear gamers, your mom isn’t here to clean up after you like she is at home," another fan mused.
"A Minecraft Movie" director Jared Hess also responded to the viral "chicken jockey" videos, though he was less critical of the teens' shenanigans.
"It's weird when you're having too much fun and the cops get called," Hess said to Entertainment Weekly. "It's funny because I think it's just literally cheering and throwing popcorn, which is so funny to me that cops are getting called for popcorn.
"Yeah, it's hilarious. I've seen so many funny videos. "
"It's great, especially when people are climbing on their friends' shoulders and standing up and cheering for those moments. It's like this crazy anticipation," he added. "But, man, I'm just glad people are making memories with their friends and families."
"A Minecraft Movie" has been a hit with moviegoers, netting more than $400 million worldwide with a domestic box office topping $220 million as Saturday, April 12.
