Macy’s will close five full-line locations located at Ballston (Arlington, VA), Bay Fair (San Leandro, CA), Kukui Grove (Lihue, HI), Simi Valley Town Center (Simi Valley, CA), and Governor’s Square (Tallahassee, FL).
The closures mean more than 2,300 employees will be laid off, CNN reports. A Macy's spokesperson said its workforce will be reduced by 3.5% "to become a more streamlined company."
“At Macy’s, we continue to reposition our store fleet to better meet the needs of our customers in each of our markets," a company spokesperson tells Daily Voice. "After careful consideration, we have decided to close our Macy’s Ballston store."

Macy’s previously shared this information with employees, who are eligible for severance benefits. Laid off workers may be considered for positions in neighboring stores, a spokesperson said.
"The decision to close a store is always a difficult one, but Macy’s is grateful to have served our customers and the community," a spokesperson said in a statement.
Neighboring locations remain open at Pentagon City, Downtown-Metro Center, Tysons Corner Center, Springfield, Montgomery Mall, and Mall at Prince George.
