Penn Hills police were called to a shooting incident in the 100 block of Prescott Drive in Pittsburgh on Monday at approximately 5:33 p.m., according to a statement released by police.
Upon arrival, police found a five-year-old boy with a gunshot wound he sustained while playing with his older sibling in a bedroom where a legally owned gun was located, according to police.
The boy, who was later identified as Connor Wolfe, by the medical examiner’s office, was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased, according to the release.
The parents are cooperating with the investigation, police say.
The Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office will determine culpability based on the evidence in the investigation, according to police.
Allegheny County Children, Youth, and Families was notified of the event, according to the release.
Wolfe was a kindergarten student in the Penn Hills School District, according to the school's website and social media posts on the incident.
“We ask all members of our Penn Hills community to remember Connor and his family in your thoughts and prayers,” administrators wrote in a statement. Counselors and social workers are being made available to students and staff.
Community members and neighbors are sharing their grief on social media. One neighbor even posted in part, " God has a new angel to help watch over us."
This shooting happened the same day as a four-year-old shot himself in the face, as Daily Voice previously reported.
In the wake of these two tragedies, police are urging the community to practice safe gun storage, using locks.
Free locks are available at five Pittsburgh area police stations.
