A student with severe burns was airlifted from a Chester County school Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out inside the building, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to the Chester County Learning Center on Lincoln Highway East in Coatesville, where they discovered that a male student, whose age was not immediately known, had apparently been severely burned inside the auto shop around the back of the building, local fire officials said.

By the time first responders arrived around 12:40 p.m., the fire had been extinguished and the smoke had cleared, according to officials.

The boy was airlifted to Philadelphia's Jefferson Hospital in unknown condition, though authorities have confirmed he was conscious and alert.

According to officials, the medical helicopter was requested at the scene because there are no nearby burn centers.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
