Pedro Gonzalez, 38, of Vineland, was traveling about 9 p.m. Thursday on Northeast Boulevard in Newfield when  he allegedly failed to stop at Catawba Avenue and collided with another car, Franklin Township police said. Gonzalez allegedly fled the crash scene.

The front-seat passenger in the other car was trapped. But the seriously hurt 17-year-old from Vineland was rescued by first responders and flown by JeffStat 4 helicopter to Cooper University Hospital in Camden.  The driver of that car and two more passengers were taken by ambulance to area hospitals, police said.

An unconfirmed report said that the teenager was unconcious and unresponsive before the medevac chopper flight. There was a special call made for Rescues 43-5 & 43-4.

Gonzalez allegedly was found in the parking lot of a nearby motel, where he was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury, police said.

Gonzalez was evaluated at the hospital. He was being held at Salem County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing, police said.
