Pennsylvania state police attempted to pull over Lee Kaniel Chavez, 43, of Aliquippa, who was driving a silver Mercedes-Benz with the PA License plate LSE0210, because they noticed the car did not have a valid registration and the owner of the vehicle was wanted on "several active arrest warrants" including "a felony warrant for aggravated assault," police say.
Chavez initially stopped in the 400 block of Fort Pitt Boulevard and the trooper approached the passenger side of the vehicle, only to have the car speed off— leading police on a pursuit through the city of Pittsburgh, according to a release by the state police.
The car later crashed and Chavez fled on foot, but the trooper continued to pursue him to the lower-level parking lot on the 300 block of Fort Duquesne Boulevard, where they used a TASER device to end the chase.
Charges against Chavez are pending, although state police say the nature of the car crash was "Driving Under the Influence Combination Alcohol/Drug."
Additional information on his condition or anyone else involved in the crash was not released.
