First responders were called to the intersection of South Bishop Avenue and Secane Avenue near the Secane train station around 1:30 p.m., according to Emergency Alerts of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
The train was an outbound Media/Elwyn Local that was heading towards Elwyn Station when it struck the car at the railroad crossing, authorities said.
The train which was scheduled to leave the Secane station at 1:18 p.m. was running on time when the collision occurred, authorities said.
Firefighters worked to free the trapped driver for around 30 minutes before pronouncing them dead at the scene.
There were no injuries to passengers or SEPTA crew members, SEPA said.
Service along the line was suspended while local officials investigated the scene.
Service was resumed shortly before 4 p.m. and trains operated on the inbound tracks only for the duration of the evening rush, authorities said.
This is the third fatal accident along the Media/Elwyn Line in the last two years, with two incidents occurring in 2019, including another incident in which a train hit an SUV at full speed during the evening rush hour, SEPA said.
The driver of that SUV was also killed as a result of the impact of the train.
Service resumed fully along the Media/Elwyn Line at 9:30 p.m.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
