Officials Identify Man, 58, Who Drowned In Swatara Creek

A fallen tree in a local creek has led to the death of a Harrisburg area man, according to officials.

The man who drowned in Swatara Creek on Saturday has been identified as Stephen "Steve" Matrese Sr., 58, of Marysville and Harrisburg.

The drowning happened while crews we're attempting to rescue him, among others on Saturday around 12:30 p.m. and he was found dead on Sunday around 1 p.m., as Daily Voice previously reported.

Matrese was a 1981 graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School and an alumnus of Harrisburg Area Community College, according to his classmates profile.

He worked as an MDO at Sovereign/Santander for over nine years and previously was employed at W&L for more than six years, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He was a devout christian, according to his Facebook posts.

His family, friends and fellow church members have been publicly mourning his loss on social media.

He is survived by his wife, son, grandchildren, and his extended family.

His church, LCBC Harrisburg, opened its doors to allow the community to gather and gain comfort on Sunday at 7:00 p.m.

Information about his upcoming funeral and any additional memorials have not been released publicly.
