South Hanover Automotive Tire Pros on Baltimore Street made the announcement following a series of reports of a spike scam intended to catch drivers off-guard.

One Hanover resident said she was recently followed by a vehicle after driving over the spikes in the middle of the night and pulling over to evaluate the damage, according to a Facebook post that has been shared more than 1,600 times.

“…As I was driving I ran this over and popped my tire, off Broadway,” the resident wrote. “There was a car who was parallel parked on my side of the road but they were facing the opposite direction of traffic. Almost immediately after running this over and noticing my tire quickly losing air, the same car made a U-turn and quickly got up on me and followed me until I got to the top of my street. Luckily I was close to home, and knew better than to pullover to check my tire.”

The resident said she filed a police report and urged residents to be cautious.

Meanwhile, the tire shop — savvy to the scam — says it will repair cars damaged by spikes at no charge for Hanover residents.

“South Hanover Automotive Tire Pros has become aware that spikes were thrown out in many areas of town,” reads a post on the shop’s Facebook page. “Appears to specifically damage tires. Our team is willing to repair these at no charge for the folks of Hanover. Anyone that has received the unpleasant and unexpected inconvenience of having a spike in their tire can come to us and we will patch and vulkanize [sic] the tire at no charge.”

The shop’s post had been shared more than 2,600 times as of Tuesday morning and flooded with comments from grateful and impressed drivers.

“They didn’t get me but guess who’s getting my money when I need new tires? You,” one commenter wrote.
