Newville Dad Charged With Murder Of First Baby Born At Penn State Hampden: Authorities

The first baby who was born at Penn State Health Hampden Medical Center has died and his father has been charged with his murder, Pennsylvania State Police announced on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.

Avery Sampson was 8 lbs and 12 ounces when he was born to Kathryn "Kat" Durham and Timothy "Tim" Lloyd Sampson at the Hampden Medical Center in Enola at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021, according to Penn State Health News.

The 13-month-old was "found died under suspicious circumstances" at the couple's home in the 100 block of Big Spring Terrace in West Pennsboro Township, Newville at 7:10 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2023, PA State Police explained in the release. 

A coordinated investigation was launched by the PSP Troop H Major Case Team, the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office, the Cumberland County Coroner’s Office, and Cumberland County Children and Youth Services.

An autopsy revealed that the baby boy died due to multiple traumatic internal injuries that “were intentionally caused,” as stated by the police in the release.

Sampson, now 25 years old and living in Mt. Holly Springs, was arrested and charged with homicide murder in the first degree, felony murder in the first degree, and a felony in the first degree for endangering the welfare of children when parent, guardian, or other commits the offense, according to his court docket. 

He was arraigned at 11:42 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, before Magisterial District Judge Vivan Cohick. She denied Sampson's bail because, he poses a "Risk of flight, risk to children in household, multiple addresses," as stated in the docket. 

He has been held in the Cumberland County Prison and his preliminary hearing has been set before Cohick at 1 p.m. on May 25, 2023.

Avery had two older brothers who survive him, in addition to his parents, according to Penn State Health News.
