Alfonso Vasquez-Lopez of West Grove, was behind the wheel of the Ford Econoline work van that was pulling out of a 1636 Baltimore Pike in New Garden Township when the eastbound motorcyclists struck the side of the vehicle around 4:40 p.m. Sunday, Southern Chester County Regional police said.

Vasquez-Lopez, 30, fled west on the Pike and then made a left turn south onto Penn Green Road, police said.

Upon arrival, officers and emergency personnel secured the scene and rendered aid to the motorcycle operators, who were both transported to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, Delaware with serious injuries.

The motorcyclist who was struck by the front of the van had one of their legs amputated, but was in stable condition at the hospital, police said.

The second motorcycle "took evasive action and partially struck the side of the van," authorities said. That operator was treated and later released from the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Southern Chester County Regional Police on Monday released surveillance footage from the incident, which captured an image of the suspect vehicle and Vasquez-Lopez.

Within hours, SCCRPD received information from an investigator with the Chester County Detective’s Office and arrested Vasquez-Lopez, who admitted to pulling out of the driveway in front of both motorcycles, striking the first and then being struck by the second, and to leaving the scene of the crash, police said.

He was charged with:

  • 2) Accidents involving death or personal injury while not properly licensed (F3)
