Matthew Witmer, 22, of Osceola Mills, was driving west along the 600 block of Rattlesnake Pike (SR 504) in Union Township when he veered off the right side of the road, struck a mailbox, crossed the center line into the oncoming lane, and slammed into an abandoned house around 12:29 a.m., Tuesday, April 1, according to Trooper Spencer Luciano with PSP Rockview.

Before crashing into the structure, Witmer’s vehicle struck a pole and a utility support wire, investigators said. His car ultimately came to rest lodged inside the abandoned building.

Inside the vehicle were two passengers — Thomas Ballantyne, 22, of Osceola Mills, and an 8-month-old infant who was improperly secured in a child seat, police said.

No serious injuries were reported at the scene, but the infant was later transported by family to Mount Nittany Medical Center for evaluation, authorities added.

Witmer is facing charges for driving under the influence and driving at an unsafe speed, state police said.

The crash investigation was launched after an automatic iPhone crash alert was received by Centre County 911 dispatchers, authorities noted.
