Police are seeking clues after a legendary elk statue that stands in front of a well-known charity lodge was vandalized with graffiti. The vandalism occurred in front of the Flemington Elks Lodge on Route 31 late on Saturday, May 7, according to Dave Norton, owner of The Corner boutique and photography studio located just down the road at 52 Main St. The word “devil” appears to have been scrawled across the statue in red paint. The Flemington-Raritan First Aid and Rescue Squad responded to the crash on Route 202-31 near Copper Hill Road in Raritan Township just before 12:25 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, the department said. The driver went unconscious after striking a utility pole, the squad said. A medical helicopter was requested but unavailable due to weather conditions. The vehicle overturned at the intersection of County Route 579 and Route 523 near the border of Delaware and Raritan Townships the afternoon of Wednesday, Feb. 9, according to the Flemington-Raritan First Aid and Rescue Squad.
