Don't Fall For It: Alert Issued For Text Message Package Delivery Scam
Police departments throughout the nation are warning the public about a new text message phishing scam that looks to be from FedEx or another delivery company about a package. The text message shows you a "tracking code" and asks you to click it to set delivery preferences for "your package." (See image above.) Police are warning anyone who gets such a text not to click on the link. The link would take you to a fraudulent site that tries to steal your personal information and money. O&R is warning its customers of a new bill payment scam that has been targeting the public. Scam callers have been contacting O&R customers and claiming to be associated with the company in hopes of stealing money. The scammer will typically threaten to shut off the customer’s service unless the customer sends a Green Dot or other prepaid debit cards. O&R never has and never will accept prepaid debit cards as a form of payment. Anyone asking for O&R bill payment via prepaid debit is attempting to scam the caller. Police in the area are cautioning local residents to be wary of a new phone scam that has been making the rounds. Last week, police officials found that they received multiple calls from area residents who received phone calls threatening to suspend their social security number if cash isn’t paid to the caller. Police noted that social security numbers “do not get suspended. This is just a scam that’s after your SSN, bank account number, or money. Businesses should proceed with caution after police revealed an ongoing scam that could affect companies all around the area, police say. The scam involves a phone call coming from an unknown number. The scammer allegedly tells the recipient that they’re from ‘corporate’ in attempts to gain the business’s trust. There's a new mail scam in the area and police are warning the public to be on the lookout.One area police department, in Fairfield County, is detailing the contents of the letter. The potential victim is sent what appears to be documentation that they have won a substantial amount of money in the “Publishers Clearinghouse” sweepstakes, according to the Darien Police Department. Officials from SUEZ Water are warning Hudson Valley residents to be on alert following a series of alleged scams involving customers in the area. SUEZ issued an alert on Monday morning urging customers to check the identification of individuals claiming to be water company employees.
