ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- More than 20 homes had to be evacuated early Monday when a high-pressure gas main was hit during work in the area sending gas shooting into the air, said the West Haverstraw Fire Department.
The main was hit in the area of N. Wayne Avenue, around 8:20 a.m., officials said.
Officials from Orange & Rockland worked for about 30 minutes to cap the main, causing Wayne Avenue and surrounding roadways to be closed for more than an hour.
Residents on three streets, including Wayne, were startled when firefighters knocked on their doors, but officials said they were quick to evacuate once they learned the reason why.
"We were lucky everything went smoothly and no one was injured," officials said.
The main was capped and the roads reopened by 9:40 a.m.
