The events leading up to the incident began on Monday, June 9, at around 12:40 p.m., when Dutchess County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in Amenia to conduct a welfare check, the Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday, June 10.
When deputies arrived, the man was not at the residence. Authorities soon learned he was in a wooded area near the intersection of Route 199 and Route 44 in the Town of North East, was armed, and had allegedly fired a shot into the air to warn off those looking for him.
Deputies set up a perimeter, and numerous units—including drones, crisis negotiators, and K-9 teams—responded to the scene. After several hours of negotiations, the man was safely taken into custody.
The suspect has been identified as 32-year-old Garrett O’Holloran. Two firearms were recovered during his arrest, the Sheriff’s Office said.
O’Holloran was taken to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie for treatment and remains there as of Tuesday. The investigation is ongoing and criminal charges are possible.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including New York State Police, the state Department of Environmental Conservation, Town of Pine Plains Police, Millerton Fire Department, and Northern Dutchess Paramedics.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized there was no threat to public safety during the operation, which prompted the temporary closure of Route 199 between Route 22 and Winchell Mountain Road, as Daily Voice reported on Monday.
