Glen Cove Man Drove Drunk On Jericho Turnpike With 1-Year-Old In Car, Police Say

A Glen Cove man has been charged with DWI under Leandra's Law after police say he drove drunk on the Jericho Turnpike with a 1-year-old in the vehicle.

Nassau County Police say they observed a driver failing to signal and maintain the proper lane on the Jericho Turnpike near Powell Lane in Westbury on Sunday, June 23 around 8 a.m.

A traffic stop was initiated, and the driver, identified as Elmer Martinez-Cartagena, 28, of Glen Cove, was determined to be under the influence of alcohol, according to police.

Martinez-Cartagena was also driving the vehicle with his one-year-old daughter seated in the rear passenger child seat, police say.

Martinez-Cartagena was arrested and the child was released to a family member that responded to the scene. Police say no injuries were reported.

Martinez-Cartagena was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated, endangering the welfare of a child and numerous traffic infractions. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Monday, June 24.
