Severe Thunderstorm Watch Now In Effect For Parts Of Region A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for parts of the region and may be expanded as several lines of storms, currently mainly north of I-84, are moving from west to east. Currently, the watch is in effect for Dutchess and Ulster counties in the Hudson Valley, Litchfield and Hartford counties in Connecticut, and Hampden, Hampshire and Worcester counties in Massachusetts. That watch was issued on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 7:10 p.m. It will last through midnight Sunday, Aug. 30. The main threat will be damaging winds. Check back to Daily Voice for updates.

A strong quake off the coast of the Alaskan peninsula that hit 7.8 on the Richter scale early in the morning Wednesday, July 22 registered on Westport’s seismograph. Hundreds of other seismographs around the world picked up on the Alaska quake. The other earthquake, in Newington, on Tuesday, July 21, came in at 1.6 on the Richter scale, making it a “Microearthquake,” and undetectable by humans. Man, Dog Bitten By Bear While Walking Connecticut Trail A man and one of his dogs were bitten by a bear in Connecticut over the weekend in Hartford County.  Simsbury Police Sgt. Brad Chase said that at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, a man was walking his three dogs in the McLean Game Refuge off Firetown Road when they encountered a bear. Chase said that the bear bit the dog, and while attempting to intervene, he too was bitten in the leg by the bear. Woman Drove Wrong Way On I-84, State Police Say A 36-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly driving in the wrong direction on I-84. Vanessa Alejos, of Newington, was arrested around 11:22 p.m., Wednesday, June 17, in Hartford County, by Connecticut State Police for driving the wrong way on I- 84 in East Hartford, state police said. Troopers were alerted to the wrong-way driver by callers and were able to track down and pull over Alejos near Exit 56, they said.
