Louis Arpi, 56, of Croton Street in Ossining, died as the result of trauma injuries he sustained in a head-on collision between the car he was driving and another vehicle. about 6:30 a.m. on Monday on Route 22 near the intersection of Thunder Ridge Road, said Capt. William McNamara.
According to preliminary reports, Arpi was driving alone in a 1986 Toyota van heading northbound on Route 22. Ahead of him, Damiana Mackoon, 47, of Patterson, was driving alone in a 2005 Jeep Liberty heading southbound on the road, McNamara said.
Mackoon reportedly attempted to pass a southbound tractor-trailer in a passing zone, but she was unable to complete that passing maneuver and her vehicle struck Arpi’s car on the northbound side of the road. The two vehicles collided head-on, he added.
A passerby called 911 to report the crash. Sheriff’s deputies, state troopers, and EMS units responded to the scene, where Arpi was pronounced dead.
Mackoon suffered only minor injuries in the crash. She was taken by ambulance to Danbury Hospital, where she was treated and released, McNamara said.
The crash closed Route 22 to traffic for about three hours as state police and sheriff’s investigators reconstructed the crash and worked to clear the scene.
No tickets were issued at the scene and the crash remains under investigation.
