Capital Region Man Sexually Abuses Young Child, Police Say A 52-year-old man from the region is facing charges after allegedly sexually abusing a young child. Columbia County resident Robert Schaefer, of Ghent, was arrested Monday, Sept. 18, by New York State Police. According to troopers, Schaefer sexually abused a victim under the age of 11. Investigators did not elaborate on his relationship to the alleged victim. Schaefer is charged with felony sexual abuse and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned in Kinderhook Court, where a judge ordered him held at the Columbia County jail on $5,000 cash bail.
