HYDE PARK, N.Y. -- Joesph's Steakhouse in Hyde Park was destroyed by an explosion and fire that began around 2 p.m. Monday, according to multiple sources.

Flames and billowing smoke were visible from the structure at 3 p.m. with the back of the restaurant and the roof receiving the most damage, fire officials said.

The restaurant at 728 Violet Ave., has been a favorite with locals since it opened in 2011, serving grass-fed steaks and Italian dishes. The restaurant was currently in the running for "Best Steak House" in "Hudson Valley" magazine's annual contest of best restaurants.

Arlington, Hyde Park, and City of Poughkeepsie fire departments assisted with the fire.

Route 9G is expected to be closed until 9 p.m. in both directions between St. Andrews Road and Franklin Road during firefighting operations.

The restaurant is closed on Monday, so no patrons were inside when the fire started.

This is a developing story.
