Zachary Seyerlein, of Stockport, was killed when his vehicle collided with a dump truck in the Columbia County town of Ghent on State Route 9H on Tuesday afternoon, April 15, New York State Police confirmed.
A preliminary investigation found that Seyerlein was driving northbound on SR-9H when his vehicle crossed over the center line into the southbound and collided with a dump truck, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, as Daily Voice reported.
The impact caused the dump truck to erupt in flames. The driver, a 55-year-old Niverville man, escaped the vehicle but was hospitalized with minor injuries, police said.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash and nobody else was injured.
State Route 9H was closed between county routes 22 and 25 for several hours while crews investigated.
Hours after his untimely death, tributes were flooding social media for Seyerlein, a longtime stock car racer who leaves behind a wife.
“Life was definitely cut way too short for this incredible human being,” VanDenburg Racing wrote on Facebook.
