Child, 8, Killed By Hit-Run Driver In Region, Police Say

An 8-year-old boy was struck and killed by a driver who then fled the scene in the Capital Region.

Fire and aid crews in Schenectady responded to Chrisler Avenue near Crane Street for a child who had been struck by a vehicle at around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, Schenectady Police said.

Officers located an 8-year-old boy who was unresponsive. The child was rushed to Ellis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

Following the collision, the driver fled the scene without stopping or rendering aid to the boy, police said.

Officers located the suspect, 29-year-old Conroy Simpson, of Queens, a short time later in the city’s Woodlawn area.

Simpson is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, a felony, and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.

Schenectady Police urged anyone with information to contact the agency at 518-788-6566.

Authorities did not publicly identify the victim due to his age.
