Emergency crews in Islip were called at around 10:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, with reports that a boat had exploded at a dock in Islip Canal, located on Main Street, according to Suffolk County Police.
When police and medics arrived, there was a strong odor of gas, police said. Officers searched the boat before finding and disabling a leaking propane tank.
Crews eventually located the sole victim of the explosion, 44-year-old Scott Murray, of Islip. He was carried to shore before being taken by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau, Town of Islip HAZMAT, the US Coast Guard, and the Islip Fire Department.
The explosion was captured by a nearby security camera and footage was shared by the Facebook group Our Islip Community.
Suffolk County Police said the incident does not appear to be criminal in nature. The investigation is ongoing.
