Antwane Lee, 31, of Bay Shore, was indicted for second-degree murder in Suffolk County Court on Tuesday, April 15, in the slaying of Justin Evans.
Lee is accused of stabbing Evans, also of Bay Shore, repeatedly outside the Heatherwood Apartments on Pond View Drive in East Patchogue on Sunday, March 30, prosecutors said.
Just after 8 p.m. that night, Suffolk County Police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man bleeding heavily and banging on doors for help. Evans had been stabbed during an altercation with Lee and collapsed while pleading for assistance.
He was eventually driven by private vehicle to nearby NYU Langone Hospital, where trauma surgeons attempted lifesaving measures, including blood transfusions. Despite their efforts, they were unable to save the young man.
An investigation found that Lee and Evans got into an altercation and Lee stabbed Evans in the neck and torso with a large serrated hunting knife, according to the Suffolk County DA’s office.
Lee then drove Evans to the emergency department at NYU Langone Hospital, located directly across the street from the apartments, before fleeing, prosecutors said. He later turned himself in to Suffolk County Police.
Detectives recovered the blood-soaked murder weapon at the crime scene.
In court Tuesday, Lee was remanded to the Suffolk County jail without bail while his case proceeds. He faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
