Abeel’s Restaurant, a family-run spot in Ballston Spa known for its warm atmosphere and elevated comfort food, will officially close its doors on Tuesday, Sept. 30, owners Tony and Julie Abeel announced in a heartfelt message to customers on Facebook.
“After 27 wonderful years in business, we’ve made the heartfelt decision to retire,” the post read. “It’s time for us to begin a new chapter and enjoy more time with our families and friends.”
Tony and Julie have operated restaurants in the area for nearly three decades, opening Abeel’s in 2002 at 910 Rock City Road. Over the years, the restaurant has become a cherished local staple, offering everything from pizza and house-made pasta to veal, salmon, meatloaf, and their popular hot apple crisp.
In the coming weeks, Abeel’s will shift to a simplified menu, but favorites and specials will remain. The restaurant also reminded customers to use any existing gift cards before the closing date, as new ones will no longer be issued.
The impending closure sparked an outpouring of support online, with hundreds of reactions and dozens of comments from longtime patrons.
“In the book of life you always come to the end of a chapter but then a new one starts,” one commenter wrote. “We will miss being able to come and visit you from Fort Plain. Enjoy retirement.”
Another added, “It’s sometimes not the business you will miss but all the friendships and people that made it special... Congratulations Tony and Julie on your new chapter!”
As the Abeels prepare to travel and spend time with friends and family, they offered one final note of gratitude:
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making Abeel’s Restaurant a beloved part of this community,” the Facebook post read. “It’s been our pleasure to serve you.”
