A woman is in critical condition after a crash on Route 1 Wednesday, April 9 knocked down utility poles, authorities said.
At 12:16 p.m., officers responded to a crash on Route 1 South near Randolph Road at the Rahway-Woodbridge border and found several utility poles damaged, Rahway police said.
Footage shows firefighters at the scene with a burning vehicle.
Motorists on social media said the incident created a "traffic nightmare."
A passenger in one of the vehicles, a 69-year-old New York resident was transported to a nearby hospital where she underwent emergency surgery and remains in critical condition, police said.
Route 1 Southbound in Rahway remains reduced to reduced to one operational lane, police said. The ramp onto Route 1 Southbound adjacent to the Super 8 Motel also remains closed, police said. Randolph Avenue is closed in both directions at the intersection from Elston Street to Woodbridge Road. Work to restore the traffic signal at Randolph Avenue is still in progress.
The crash remains under investigation.
