Sgt. Mark Kershaw and Officer James Cappello, along with an Oakland police officer, found the 23-year-old man parked in his car about midway across the bridge just after 9:20 p.m. Sunday, Capt. Kenneth Fackina said.
"He was calm and cooperative but indicated he was having some emotional problems and had threatened suicide," Fackina said.
His girlfriend arrived soon after and he was eventually taken to the hospital by the Wanaque First Aid Squad, the captain said, adding that State Police were handling the case.
Another Oakland police unit and the NJSP assisted with traffic control.
