Braswell, who played at Georgetown from 1998 to 2002 before embarking on a long professional career overseas, passed away in Japan weeks after undergoing heart surgery, according to the Utsunomiya Brex, the team he was coaching in the country’s domestic league.
No cause of death has been announced, but Braswell had remained hospitalized for weeks following heart surgery.
"We would like to express our heartfelt respect and gratitude to Mr. Braswell for his dedication to the development of the club and his contribution to the growth of the team over the course of two seasons," Utsunomiya Brex officials said in a statement.
"Since his hospitalization on January 17, the entire team has continued to support him, hoping for a speedy recovery, but his wish has not been granted and we are filled with great loss and deep sadness."
His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the basketball world, with former teams, fans, and loved ones paying tribute to his impact on the game and those around him.
"Today we mourn the passing of Breakers legend Kevin Braswell," the New Zealand Breakers said in a statement. "KB, a former player, championship winner, 6th man of the year, and head coach, passed away overnight. Our thoughts and aroha (love) go out to his family at this time."
A Baltimore native, Braswell attended Lake Clifton Eastern High School before heading to Georgetown, where he became one of the program’s all-time greats.
He finished his career ranking first in school history in assists (695) and steals (349), and 10th in scoring with 1,735 points.
After college, Braswell played professionally in multiple countries, including Israel, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Russia, Turkey, and France, before finding a home in New Zealand, where he won a championship and earned a Sixth Man of the Year Award.
Following his retirement, Braswell transitioned into coaching, eventually leading teams in New Zealand and Japan.
His family has now launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover memorial expenses.
"It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Kevin," organizers wrote. "He touched the lives of so many through his kindness, generosity, and love for basketball.
"His loss has left a deep void, but we find comfort in the memories we shared and the love that he showed to his family and friends."
Tributes from fans and loved ones have poured in following news of Braswell's passing.
The family is asking for donations to help cover funeral costs and other expenses, while also requesting support in the form of shares, prayers, and kind words.
"We understand that not everyone may be able to contribute financially, but if you could share this page or keep us in your thoughts and prayers, it would be just as appreciated," the fundraiser states.
