Just before 2:10 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, a Honda SUV driven by a 62-year-old Jackson man was heading south in the local lanes while a Toyota SUV driven by a 20-year-old Montville man were both heading south in the express lanes, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron said.
Near milepost 115.9, the Honda veered off the roadway to the left, crossing the grass median between the local and express lanes, Lebron said. The Honda then crossed the express lanes, entered the grass median separating the northbound and southbound roadways, and collided with the Toyota.
The Honda driver was seriously injured while the Toyota driver suffered minor injuries.
The crash caused two miles of traffic delays.
An NJDOT camera at milepost 115.9 showed a damaged red vehicle in the grass between the express and local lanes. Traffic was also rerouted into the northbound local lanes and the express side was closed as crews responded to the scene.
