These Two New Jersey Counties Flipped From Red To Blue In 2020

As President Joe Biden cruised to victory in New Jersey in the 2020 presidential election, he got some help from two counties that went his way after voting for former President Donald Trump in 2016: Morris and Gloucester.

Morris County went to Biden, 51.14% to 46.90%, 153,881 votes to 141,134 votes. It was a remarkable turnaround for a county that hadn't voted Democrat at the presidential level since Lyndon Johnson defeated Barry Goldwater in 1964.

In 2016, Morris County voted for Trump, who defeated Clinton 126,071 votes to 115,249 votes, 49.72% to 45.46%.

In 2020, Sen. Cory Booker, D-NJ, became the first Democratic senate candidate to carry Morris County since Sen. Bill Bradley in 1984.

Biden was able to win by taking Parsippany by more than 3,000 votes. He won Randolph by 2,300 votes and squeaked by in Mount Olive by 800 votes. He also won big in Morris Township and Morristown.

The last Democrat to win a countywide office in Morris County was in 1973. Morris County has not voted a Democrat for governor since Brendan Byrne since 1973.

Gloucester County surprised everyone when it went for former President Donald Trump in 2016, as he defeated Hillary Clinton, 67,544 votes to 66,870 votes. It was the first time a Republican had won Gloucester at the presidential level since George Bush in 1988 and Barack Obama had won the county by double digits in 2008 and 2012.

In 2020, Biden won the county back, winning 50% to 48%, 86,702 votes to 83,340 votes. While Trump won Washington Township, Biden defeated Trump in Monroe, Deptford and West Deptford.

Gloucester County also voted for Sen. Cory Booker by about 4,500 votes in 2020. The county continues to be a swing county as the next year it voted for Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli over Gov. Phil Murphy by 10 points.

Trump was unable to flip any counties in 2020 that he lost in 2016.
