Rabid Skunk Found In Central Jersey Township, Health Officials Say
A skunk in Mercer County has tested positive for rabies, authorities said. The skunk was found near Van Dyke Road in Hopewell Township on Saturday, Nov. 23, the township's health department said in a news release on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The animal was submitted for testing at the state Public Health and Environmental Laboratories in Trenton. It was confirmed to be positive for rabies on Monday, Nov. 25. A Hunterdon County animal control officer has been arrested and charged with official misconduct and theft after authorities say she refused to give a dog back to its rightful owner. Carolyn Murphy, the Frenchtown Animal Control Officer, had been asked to take temporary custody of an American bulldog on April 11, Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée M. Robeson said. A raccoon has tested positive for rabies after an altercation with dogs in South Brunswick, authorities said. The fight between a resident's dogs and a raccoon occurred on Deans Lane on Saturday, July 20, according to South Brunswick police. The raccoon was retrieved by animal control and sent for testing. It was a happy ending for a parrot that got loose in Morris County on Saturday, July 20. The Morris County Sheriff's Office responded to Hedden Park for a report of a loose parrot near the Concord Avenue parking lot, authorities said. Dog Bites Troopers On Route 80:

A loose dog was a little overzealous on Route 80 in Warren County on Tuesday, May 28, authorities said. Troopers responded to a report of a dog running on Route 80 eastbound in Allamuchy Township, Jeffrey Lebron a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police said. When troopers and civilians tried to capture the dog, they were bitten, Lebron said. The troopers and civilians suffered minor injuries, Lebron said. The dog was captured and turned over to nearby animal control, Lebron said.
