The man reported to the department Records Bureau around 9:15 a.m. that he had the grenade in the trunk of his car parked out in front of the municipal complex, Capt. Laurence W. Martin said.
Wayne police summoned the Passaic County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad, which rendered the device safe and removed it for disposal, the captain said.
"We consider them all explosive and live, so they are transported to a gun range and exploded safely," Martin told Daily Voice. "Many of these are souvenirs from soldiers that fought in WWII and were able to ship them home during their deployments," he said.
The shelter in place was lifted at 10:09 a.m.
