Officer Tomasz Cydzik stopped the silver 2005 Mercedes Benz, which nearly struck a utility pole head-on and continued into oncoming traffic on Mountain View Boulevard late Saturday, Capt. Laurence Martin said.
The driver, 23-year-old Kerelazi M. Burell of Kinnelon, "had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage," along with slow speech and bloodshot eyes, Martin said.
His driver's license also was suspended, the captain said.
As Cydzik and backup Officer Ray Caronia took him into custody, Burrell threatened to kill each of them, Martin said.
Burrell failed a breath test before being released to a responsible adult, he said.
He was charged with making terroristic threats, DWI, failing to keep right and driving while suspended, among other offenses, the captain said.
