The accused assailant, 17 at the time of the incident, turned himself in to police Tuesday and was charged with aggravated assault and endangering an injured victim, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said.
A 16-year-old co-defendent accused of filming the incident pleaded not guilty to the same charges during his first appearance in the Family Divisio of Superior Court, Valdes said. The viral video shows an assailant walking up to a man on a street corner in the Rosa Parks neighborhood of Paterson in December. Egged on by a 16-year-old friend recording video on a cellphone, he punches the unsuspecting man in the face, knocking him to the ground.
Both teens are scheduled to return to court Feb. 25, the prosecutor said.
