Detectives charged Leonel Tovar Martinez, 40, of Jackson Street with nearly two dozen counts each of possessing, distributing and maintaining child pornography, Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik said.
Members of Berdnik's Internet Crime Unit arrested Martinez following a two-month investigation sparked by tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children -- and assisted by the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office Sexual Investigations Unit, the sheriff said.
He remained held in the Passaic County Jail pending the outcome of his case.
"As a father of four children, I feel strongly that child pornography needs to be thoroughly investigated and those responsible need to be arrested," Berdnik said.
