Off-Duty Wayne Police Officer Struck By Postal Truck

WAYNE, N.J. – An off-duty Wayne police officer training for a charity bicycle race over the weekend was struck by a U.S. Postal Service truck, authorities said.

Officer Sean Mitchell was training at 10:20 a.m.for a Multiple Sclerosis Bike Run next month that he participates in every September when he was struck on Demarest Drive.

Mitchell, 47, who police said was wearing a helmet, was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center with head and neck injuries, a department release says.

The 16-year veteran was in guarded condition and "expected to make a full recovery," it says.

Mitchell participates in the Police Unity Tour, in which officers ride bicycles from all part of the country Washington D.C. each spring to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Memorial.
